The UIM F2 World Championship campaign got underway today with the first free practice and qualifying session of the season!
18 boats took to the water for a fast and furious qualifying session. Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashed Al Qemzi topped the first session with Britain’s Mette Bjerknaes the second fastest in the session.
With 20 frantic minutes elapsed the top 15 boats headed into Q2 for a further 15 minutes of edge of the seat action. Less than a second separated the top five boats.
F2 Rookie Stefan Arand from Estonia took the first position into qualifying 3 just ahead of Norwegian Tobias Munthe-Kaas and Monégasque Giacomo Sacchi. Also joining them in the Top six were Abu Dhabi’s duo of Rashed Al Qemzi and Mansoor Al Mansoori.
So it was onto Q3 and a final 15 minutes to determine who would secure the first Pole position of the season.
All six racers took a turn in taking the lead in the session and the lead exchanged hands numerous times as the 15 minute session progressed.
As the chequered flag was waved Giacomo Sacchi took the fastest lap to secure himself the first Pole position of the season, with Rookie Racer Stefan Arand in second and Tobias Munthe-Kaas in third.
On securing Pole Position Sacchi had this to say “It was a really tough session. I have to say thanks to my team and especially my Radioman as he kept me calm through the session. It’s great to have secured Pole and now we look forward to the race tomorrow!”
